Scores of Bradford probation staff manned picket lines in the district today during a 24-hour protest strike against Government plans to privatise part of the service.

About 80 probation officers and administration staff camped outside the four Bradford district probation offices and the crown court building.

Katie Lomas, of probation union NAPO, said the picketers in Bradford had been given much support from both members of the public and “service users”.

She said: “The public has been very supportive and we have also had a lot of service users speaking to us on the picket lines, asking what was happening. They have been very supportive and not happy about the plans to privatise probation.”

The strike was continuing until noon tomorrow.
