Fire crews in West Yorkshire dealt with 13 callouts while union members went on strike today.

The incidents in Bradford included crashes and a man getting his hand trapped in machinery.

Members of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) took industrial action between 6am and 8am which meant strike cover was needed for 30 fire engines.

The crashes in Bradford included a car landing in a field at Queensbury with one casualty, then shortly after 8am a two-car smash at Ingleby Road, Lidget Green, where two people had to be freed by firefighters from one of the vehicles and they and one other person had to be taken to hospital.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service Assistant Chief Officer Dave Walton, said: “This morning has been exceptionally busy in comparison to other similar periods.

“Our contingency crews have dealt with all incidents effectively and professionally.”

The action was the third period of strike action taken by members of the FBU because of an ongoing trade dispute between the FBU and the Government over its public sector pension reform programme including plans to introduce a new Firefighters’ Pension Scheme from April 2015.
