Sandy Toksvig
St George’s Hall
There were a few surprises to be learned about comedienne and broadcaster Sandy Toksvig at her one-woman show on Saturday.
Among them were her celebrity Danish heritage through her broadcaster father, her upbringing and schooling in New York, the number of books she has penned and, most of all the laugh-out-loud quality of her performance.
We were treated to a hugely amusing monologue about her many adventures around the world, her love of the English language and her relentless zest for finding the funny side in every facet of life.
She brought all her sharp-minded observational humour to a wonderful recitation, backed up by a kind of slide show, humour and self-deprecation which had the audience in tucks.
She finished her set encouraging the whole audience to get to their feet and ‘air-conduct’ with her the finale of Beethoven’s 9th symphony – just to show we all still had a zest for life. After this show, I for one certainly did!
