A horticulturalist who has been a stalwart of In Bloom judging for four decades has received a coveted accolade.
Maurice Baren, of Haworth, has been presented with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) outstanding contribution award.
The 76-year-old, who has judged across Europe and in Canada, said he was delighted to receive the honour.
He was given a glassware trophy and certificate at an RHS national awards ceremony, in Cleethorpes.
“It’s very nice to feel that people appreciate the work I have put in over the years,” said Mr Baren, of Branwell Drive. “It has been a marvellous part of my life and I have met some wonderful people.”
His association with Yorkshire in Bloom stretches back to 1974, since when he has enjoyed two spells as chairman. In 2000, he was invited to judge at UK level, three years later in the European competition – Entente Florale – and then in Canada.
“Judging has taken me to many countries across Europe and it has been fantastic to see for example how big an impact the competition is having in Eastern European states, where it is used to help bring commercial benefits such as attracting tourists and more businesses to areas,” he said.
