A spokesman for Keighley’s biggest mosque says it has been radically transformed since one of its teachers admitted hitting pupils two years ago.

Mohammed Saleem, community relations and education officer for Keighley Muslim Association, is inviting as many people as possible to attend an open day next month at the Markazi Jamia Mosque.

He wants to attract people who may never have been inside the Emily Street building, which was the subject of a damning TV expose in 2011.

The mosque hit the headlines when madrassa teacher Sabir Hussain, of Spencer Street, was caught on camera slapping and kicking children during classes. The 60-year-old subsequently admitted four charges of assaulting boys and was jailed for ten weeks.

Mr Saleem said: “Since 2011 a lot of new procedures have been put in place and staff have received child protection and health and safety training.

“We now have a system in place to reward children for their achievement and progression.”

Madrassa safeguarding advisor Rashid Karolia, who visited the Emily Street Mosque in August, said: “The mosque custodians can take credit for the work they’ve done.”

Mr Saleem said the November 20 open day forms part of Interfaith Week.

He added: “Non-Muslim people walking past the mosque or shopping at Asda may only be able to imagine or assume what goes on inside. So this open day will be a great experience for them.”

The event begins with a tour of the mosque at midday, followed by lunch at 12.30pm. Visitors will be able to observe prayers at 1pm. A second tour will be held at 4.15pm.
