Police are warning van owners in Bradford to keep a close eye on their vehicles after a spate of wheel thefts across the district.
Since September, thieves have targeted 20 vans across the city, often using cutting equipment to remove the spare wheel from the vehicle.
The most recent incident was in Harper Grove, Idle, where thieves climbed under the vehicle and removed the wheel from its securing strap. Police are now asking van owners to take some simple steps to help prevent their spare wheels from being stolen.
Inspector Andrew Addy, said: “We are asking all van owners to be vigilant to this type of theft.
“You might also want to consider using a strong lock to keep your spare wheel in place, or removing the wheel and keeping it locked and secure in your vehicle."
Insp Addy also said he believed that the thieves were using vehicles, or possibly mobile containers such as wheelie bins, to transport the stolen property.
“Anyone who sees someone acting suspiciously around their van is asked to call the police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111,” he said.
