Fewer than one in ten drug addicts who undergo detox treatment complete the course, a new report reveals.
In 2012/13, 3,017 people underwent treatment for drug addiction in the district, 2,577 of which were opiate and crack users.
The report says detox treatment has got tougher recently, requiring patients to “demonstrate higher levels of motivation and commitment to recover”.
This has meant some people may have chosen to drop out because they were “unwilling to engage”, it said.
But overall the number of success stories was on the rise, from about six per cent successfully completing treatment in 2011/12 to about eight per cent in the most recent figures.
More than half of the alcoholics who seek help complete their detox treatments successfully, the report to Bradford Council’s Corporate Overview and Scrutiny Committee shows.
About 92,000 people in the district are drinking hazardous amounts of alcohol, a report into drink and drug use reveals.
Of these, about 17,000 people are drinking at levels which are likely to cause them physical or psychological harm.
