Bradford Council leader David Green has condemned MP George Galloway for complaining about the “tedium” of his job.
In a magazine interview Bradford West MP Mr Galloway described Parliament as “two per cent terrifying, and 98 per cent tedium” while saying he “relished” elections.
Coun Green said Mr Galloway, who is considering running as a candidate for mayor of London, was acting like “a spoilt child who suddenly sees a shiny new toy in the toy box”.
Coun Green said: “The people of Bradford, and of Bradford West in particular, deserve better than this from their MP. George Galloway has shown a contempt for all those people who voted for him last year.
“It is an honour and a privilege to be elected by the people of this great city and such an honour is not something that should be thrown away lightly.
“The people and businesses of the district need representatives who are committed to fighting for our city who are committed to our future and willing to give voice to our concerns.
“These comments by Mr Galloway call into serious doubt his willingness and ability to fulfil this role.”
Speaking earlier to the Telegraph & Argus, Mr Galloway had said he had not been referring to his constituency work as tedious, only life in the House of Commons.
Of his work in Bradford West, he said: “That’s about the only bit I enjoy.”
He also robustly defended his work in the constituency, saying he held a popular surgery at his Grattan Road office each week.
He said: “I’m dealing with hundreds of cases. I do a weekly surgery, every Saturday morning at 11am, at 2 Grattan Road. It’s packed every week. Bradford is nothing if not short of problems.
“I’m working hard for Bradford. When I arrived in Bradford, the Odeon was about to be knocked down, the Westfield hole in the ground was looking like it was going to go on forever and then the National Media Museum was going to close. All of them have turned around.”
