Ten young Bradford residents are taking their first steps towards finding work in the construction sector because of Incommunities.

They are the latest recruits onto the social housing group’s Swan Project, which aims to help local people develop and learn new skills.

The free five-week construction course, run jointly by staff from the Swan Project and Incommunities’ Training Terrace, has targeted young unemployed people aged 16-25. It is supported by European funding.

As part of the course, the budding builders started off by taking part in physical challenges such as rock climbing and orienteering. They were also encouraged to develop their team skills.

Each participant has spent a week at the Training Terrace learning the basics of different building skills under the guidance of the housing group’s fully qualified trades professionals.

They have also been learning about the importance of health and safety on construction sites.

The Training Terrace at Dudley Hill is a custom-built construction facility which includes ‘mocked up’ rooms where apprentices and visiting groups can gain practical work experience.

The training finishes with the young people taking part in work placements with the housing group’s building and maintenance teams.

Those trainees successfully completing the course will be funded through the Construction Skills Certification Scheme to obtain a card enabling them to work on building sites.

The top student on the course will also receive £200 towards driving lessons and a provisional driving licence.

Karline Symes, from the course, said: “I’ve learnt a lot about myself doing the course. It’s been the right move and given me the confidence to go out and find work.”

“Staff at our Training Terrace have played a key role working alongside our Swan Team to deliver the training and share their expertise and knowledge with the young people.

“Following the programme the young people will continue to receive individual support from the Swan Team to achieve their goals.

“This is one of a wide range of courses the team is running from cook and eat to employability training to improve their lives.”

The Swan Project is supported through the European Union’s PARES programme.
