Architects have unveiled a plan to turn a derelict nightclub and bar into a high-rise student complex in the heart of the city.

The former Castaways club and Mode bar, behind the former Odeon Cinema and Alhambra theatre buildings on Great Horton Road, Bradford, have stood empty for six years.

Under the new plan, they would be flattened and replaced with a development providing accommodation for about 265 students.

The highest building is expected to be 12 storeys tall.

As part of the plan, a Grade-II listed wool warehouse on Quebec Street, most recently used as the club’s toilets and storage area, would be renovated to become a student cafe.

The four-storey building is believed to date back to 1800, making it one of the city centre’s oldest structures.

The plans have been unveiled by Riverside Design Studio Architects on behalf of the site’s owner Michael Testler, of Castlebrook Properties.

The firm, based at Salts Mill in Saltaire, is keen to hear the views of the public before submitting a planning application.

Riverside Design Studio director Francesco Pacitto said they had been keen to design a complex which complemented, rather than overshadowed, its iconic neighbours.

He said: “There are many examples of how high quality modern architecture can successfully sit alongside wonderful historic buildings. It will appear as a cluster of smaller buildings rather than a single mass to complement rather than dominate other important buildings in the area.”

Estate agent Mark Brearley, of Mark Brearley and Co, who looks after the site on behalf of Castlebrook Properties, said: “As well as being an eyesore, the existing property has been empty for six years and there has been no interest whatsoever in letting it.”
