Cash totalling nearly £15,000 will be winging its way to worthy youth projects across the Bradford East area.
A fund set up to give young people more things to do in their spare time has doled out money to nine separate projects.
The bids were scrutinised by a panel of young people in the area, who made recommendations to Bradford East Area Committee about which bids should get funding, and how much.
Committee chairman Councillor Mohammed Shafiq praised the young panellists. He said: “I want to thank them for their determination and commitment at looking at the bids themselves and spending quality time on it, because it does take up a huge chunk of their time.”
The following Youth Opportunities Fund grants, totalling £14,924, were approved:
Community Works in Undercliffe Lane, Bradford was awarded £1,915 to refurbish and redecorate its youth area. The charity, which runs a community centre and children’s centre, will use the cash to buy decorating materials as well as new equipment and resources for the children.
Thornbury Youth and Community Centre in Lower Rushdon Road, Bradford Moor, has been given £1,510 to fund activities based on health and well-being. The centre will use the cash to pay for overheads such as lighting and heating, as well as the cost of instructors and activities.
The Karmand Centre in Barkerend Road, Barkerend, was awarded £1,910 to fund residential trips and outdoor activities for young people.
Eccleshill Youth Club was awarded £2,000 for a teenage pregnancy project.
The charity PHAB (Physically Handicapped Able Bodied) has been given £2,000 which will be used to give disabled young people dance and theatre experiences.
Bradford Academy has also been awarded £2,000 to help pay for 16 young people to go to India to take part in a community project and trek.
A total of £830 has been awarded to Bradford Moor Girls’ Group to develop a project promoting craft and entrepreneurial skills.
The Chill Zone, based at the Thornbury Centre, Leeds Old Road, has been given £1,185 to develop things to do at the club.
Fagley Youth and Community Centre, in Fagley Road, Fagley, was granted £1,574. The cash will be used to develop a music room among other things.
Only one application was turned down. Skills For Life had applied for £1,995 to pay for three months of African drumming workshops. The panel decided this would not be attractive and said the bid had not been written by young people either.
