A driver accused of causing the death of a Bradford father who was due to be married has appeared before a judge at the city’s crown court.

Yasser Mughal, 31, has been charged with causing death by careless driving in relation to a collision on Manningham Lane in January which claimed the life of father-of-seven Norman Cowen.

The 50-year-old plasterer, who had been due to marry is 41-year-old sweetheart Mandy in June this year, suffered a serious head injury in the collision and never regained consciousness.

Mr Cowen had been crossing Manningham Lane when he was involved in a collision with a car and died in hospital a few days later.

Mughal, of Aireville Avenue, Shipley, appeared before Judge David Hatton QC at Bradford Crown Court yesterday for a plea and case management hearing, but he was not asked to enter a plea to the charge after his barrister Andrew Dallas asked for the hearing to be adjourned until November 26.

Judge Hatton agreed to the adjournment and granted Mughal bail until next month.

Speaking to the Telegraph & Argus the week after Mr Cowen’s death, his sister-in-law Kath Laws revealed that he was set to wed Mandy on June 8 in Bradford – the same day as his brother Paul’s birthday.

The couple had booked their wedding in November and the death had left Mandy distraught.

His mum, Ann, 72, was on holiday in Australia visiting Mr Cowen’s sister, Gail, when the tragedy happened and caught an emergency flight back home.

Mrs Laws described Mr Cowen as a happy-go-lucky chap.

Born in Cullingworth, father-of-seven Mr Cowen’s favourite haunt was the Shoulder of Mutton pub in Bradford.

Mrs Laws revealed that the family had agreed to donate his organs and that his kidneys and heart valves had been used already.
