A photograph of a unique ice sculpture has become the latest artwork to feature in Bradford’s Cartwright Hall’s ‘Picture in Focus’ series.
‘Ice Fish’, a 1987 piece by artist Andy Goldsworthy, will be on display in the Bradford Council-run museum until Thursday, October 31.
The sculpture resembles a fish, with individual triangular pieces of ice arranged to represent its scales or skeleton.
Sally-Anne Buck, a museum assistant at Cartwright Hall who chose the picture to be exhibited, said: “When I first saw Ice Fish I was captivated by its primitive and mysterious style. I love the collaboration between the artist and the landscape and how he has created something beautiful, made all the more unique as it will eventually melt away and disappear forever.”
Mr Goldsworthy studied fine art at Bradford College from 1974-75 and received an honorary degree from the University of Bradford in 1993. He was given an OBE in 2000 and has previously won the Yorkshire Arts Award.
‘Ice Fish’ was bought by Bradford Museums and Galleries in 1988, and Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, Executive Member for Culture, said: “This is a great opportunity to view an important piece of work by an internationally respected sculptor that has not been displayed for several years.”
