A pregnant woman saved by neighbours from her blazing home appeared in custody at Bradford Magistrates Court charged with arson with intent to endanger life at the weekend.

Charlene Hall, 26, was remanded back behind bars to appear before the Crown Court on Friday, October 25.

Hall, with shoulder-length blonde hair and wearing a blue sweatshirt, wept as she was led back to the cells in handcuffs after the 9.30am hearing on Saturday.

She is accused of arson with intent to endanger life at Thackeray Road on Bradford’s Ravenscliffe estate in the early hours of Friday.

Alison Whiteley, for the prosecution, told magistrates that a neighbour heard a “popping sound” from the house and the fire alarm sounding.

Hall was pulled out of a window and carried down a ladder.

Miss Whiteley said the ground floor of the semi-detached house was gutted and the property was now uninhabitable.

She asked the magistrates to remand Hall in custody until her appearance at Crown Court.

Hall’s solicitor advocate, Alias Yousaf, applied for her to be granted bail.

He said she had no longer been living at the address in Thackeray Road and had a home in Howgate, Idle, Bradford, she could go to.

Mr Yousaf said Hall was three months pregnant and had no intention of harming herself or anyone else.

Hall was rescued from the blazing house by heart attack survivor Garry Hodgson. He told the Telegraph & Argus on Friday how he was first beaten back by ferocious flames and choking smoke at ground floor level.

He climbed a ladder to reach Hall through a tiny bathroom window, before throwing her over his shoulder and carrying her down to safety.

The 6ft 4in tall father-of-eight was the first neighbour on the scene and arrived to find the whole of the ground floor engulfed in flames.

Another neighbour, Bobby Conway, 43, tried to smash his way in with a garden hoe but the heat beat him back.

|He said he heard Mr Hodgson shout that he had managed to rescue Hall.
