Detectives trying to trace the mother of a baby boy whose body was found in rubbish at a waste-processing plant in Shipley have had a good response for help from the public so far.

Officers from the Homicide and Major Enquiries Team are now following a number of lines of enquiry, with their main concern still being the welfare of the mother.

“As previously stated, our primary concern is for the welfare of the mother and we would ask anyone with information to contact the Homicide and Major Enquiries Team on 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555111,” said a police spokesman.

The grim find was made last month by workers at Associated Waste Management in Valley Road.

It was the second time in little more than two years that a baby’s body had been found there.

Detectives believe the boy was likely to have died sometime in the previous two weeks before he was discovered where tons of waste are opened and spread out for sorting into waste types.

Officers are working with local authorities, including Bradford Council, to try to identify where the rubbish containing the body was collected.

In May 2011, part of the remains of a baby girl was discovered by a worker and despite a major police investigation her identity has still not been established and a funeral for her took place last summer.

The waste company worked with the community to raise funds and help give a decent burial for the first baby girl, who they had named Catherine after Prince William’s bride. It had also created a memorial garden at the site.

The company has said it would not hesitate to do the same for the baby boy.

Detective Superintendent Mark Ridley, who is leading the inquiry, has urged the mother of the baby, who may have health and welfare issues, to come forward.
