A builder who partially blinded a man by smashing a glass into his face on a pub dance floor has been sentenced to 20 months imprisonment, suspended for two years, with 300 hours of unpaid work.
David Shackleton, 31, of Red Holt Crescent, Keighley, pleaded guilty to unlawfully wounding Richard Turner in the Ferrands Arms in Bingley town centre on February 16.
Bradford Crown Court heard yesterday that Shackleton struck Mr Turner, 43, when an altercation broke out after 11pm.
Mr Turner, who was acting as peacemaker when trouble started, suffered a serious injury to his right eye, needing 11 stitches, prosecutor David McGonigal said.
Shackleton suffered a revenge attack outside the pub when someone broke a glass on his head.
Mr McGonigal said Mr Turner’s eye was permanently damaged and his sight impaired.
Shackleton’s barrister, Ken Green, said he felt clear, sincere and genuine remorse and was of previous good character.
Judge David Hatton QC accepted that Shackleton did not intend to cause Mr Turner his “appalling” injuries.
