One of the district’s MPs has revealed that more than £575 million in court fines is unpaid across the UK.
Shipley MP Philip Davies said the amount was unacceptable and made a mockery of the justice system.
He said: “People will be astonished by this eye-watering amount of money that is owed. People are sticking two fingers up at the courts. If people do not pay they should be sent to prison.”
The amount outstanding at the end of March this year was £575,507,170. It includes outstanding fines, costs orders, compensation orders and unpaid fixed penalty notices.
