Golfers swung into action to raise an ace £5,000 to help charities.

The West Yorkshire Working Stewards Golf Society (WYWS) collected the money through nine golfing days held since April.

Members pay £20 to play, with £6 going to charities and a further £5 collected from each player for a ball draw or raffle.

WYWS was formed in 2010 by Mick Mifsud, a steward at Woodhall Hills Golf Club in Calverley.

He said the society was “chuffed” with the amount raised.

“It started off just as a day out for stewards to meet each other and socialise. It’s just taken off every year and got better and better,” he said.

This week the WYWS handed £2,000 each to Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Martin House Hospice.

Earlier in the season, £468 was given to The Jamie Adamson Memorial Fund, based in Rawdon. A further £500 was used to sponsor the Bradford & District Union of Golf Clubs’ junior team.

The organisation raised £2,400 in 2011, £3,538 in 2012 and £5,000 this year and has also supported Macmillan Cancer Support, Help For Heroes, Candlelighters and Take Heart.

Members nominate charities each year which are drawn from a hat.

Next year, Martin House Hospice will be the society’s chosen charity with a special fundraising day planned with hopes of raising £3,000.
