Historic Bingley Five Rise locks on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal is playing host to a family fun day with a wildlife twist this weekend.
Activities on Sunday will enable families to discover the wildlife on their doorstep as well as learn about life on an historic working boat.
The day is being run by the Canal & River Trust which cares for 2,000 miles of waterways in England & Wales.
Education volunteers from the Trust’s Explorers will be leading a wildlife trail around North Bog, offering an I Spy quiz along the towpath and running a range of other fun colouring and origami activities to help families learn about the waterways.
The historic working boat Kennet will be moored up with members of the ‘Friends of Kennet’ on hand to explain what life was like on the working waterways. Activities will also be taking place on the Angus Ferguson community barge.
Bingley Five Rise is an iconic piece of engineering built in 1774 and is the only Grade I listed lock flight in the country.
The locks raise the Leeds and Liverpool canal by 60ft via the steepest staircase lock flight in Britain and the site has been dubbed one of the ‘seven wonders of the waterways’.
Sarah Cook, education coordinator for the Trust said: “There’s going to be so much to see and do on the day so I really would urge people to come along, learn a little and enjoy the fantastic waterways.”
The day runs from 11am to 4pm.
