The Independent Police Complaints Commission has met with the family of pensioner Donald Bennett, who was tragically killed by a runaway police van in Pudsey Park at the weekend.

A spokesman for the IPCC, which is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of 83-year-old Mr Bennett, said its staff had met with members of the dead man’s family at his home in Pudsey, to explain the investigation.

Cindy Butts, the IPCC’s Commissioner for West Yorkshire, said: "This is a tragic incident in which an elderly man lost his life. I will ensure our investigation is robust and that it provides the answers Mr Bennett’s family and friends will understandably want.”

The grandfather, a retired joiner and former president of Pudsey Liberal Club, died when the unattended police van rolled down a slope and struck him as he walked in the park on Saturday afternoon, as an officer responded to reports of a disturbance.

West Yorkshire Police referred the incident to the IPCC, which then launched an independent investigation.

Anyone with information about the collision is urged to contact the IPCC investigation team, on 0800 096 9078, or by emailing Pudseypark@ipcc.gsi.gov.uk.
