Ten green-fingered volunteers at a Calverley-based business planted more than 1,000 vegetable plants in their local park as part of a campaign to encourage more people to grow their own veg.
Staff at fleet management company Zenith teamed up with the Calverley Horticultural Society to help support the Feed Leeds initiative, which encourages people to promote and support the growth of edible plants in the city.
They planted lettuce, sweetcorn, beetroot, fennel, chard and globe artichokes in a vegetable bed in Victoria Park, Calverley. The plants were provided by Leeds Council and it is hoped that the bed will help the village maintain the gold medal awarded last year to Calverley in Bloom. Judging for the competition takes place in July.
Marisa Jerrison, Zenith head of human resources and development, said: “This has been a great initiative for Zenith employees to get involved in. As we are based in Calverley it enables us to encourage our community to grow their own food, as well as provide an attractive addition to the local park.”
