Bradford Trades Union Council (BTUC) and Bradford People’s Coalition against the Cuts are demonstrating in support of strikes by the public service union PCS today.

And they are expecting to be joined in the protest by members of other unions.

They are claiming moves to close walk-in tax offices will cost more than the Tory-led Coalition claims it will save.

The Government wants to close all 281 walk-in tax offices to save £13 million, claiming it costs an average of £152 for every visit, and replace them with ‘mobile teams.’ But the PCSU says the Government has got its sums wrong and the closures would hit minorities and vulnerable groups hardest.

Pensioners, people on low incomes, migrant workers and the disabled rely on the offices to sort out problems that could leave them without enough money for food and heating.

The PCSU represents more than 1,000 of the 1,300 staff employed at the tax offices.

The demonstration in support of the Union is taking place at noon in the memorial gardens behind City Hall.

BTUC is the umbrella organisation for trade unionists from all industries.
