Organisers are hoping to double the number of people taking part in this year’s Otley Cycling Festival.

Last year’s inaugural event attracted 120 enthusiasts of all ages who enjoyed everything from gentle cycle path rides and children’s games to serious long-distance road races. A host of similar attractions, and more, will be held by Otley Cycle Club this year between 9am and 8pm on Sunday, July 14, from Weston Lane Football Club.

Otley Cycle Club member Gwen Oates recently interviewed veteran cyclist Marjorie Dunn, grandmother of Otley’s Olympic cyclist Lizzie Armitstead, who would also like to see more people switch to two wheels – but understands why some are still wary of getting on the roads.

Mrs Dunn said: “There are large areas in Britain like York, Lancaster and Cambridge, to name but a few, which have excellent cycle lanes but Otley is in dire need of them.
