Villagers are working up an appetite for an edible veg bed in their local park.
Victoria Park in Calverley is the first in the area to get a plot to turn into an ornamental vegetable garden, and if the initiative is a success, other parks across Leeds will get one too.
Bev Smith, who already has an allotment in Calverley, said she was inspired to get in touch with the Council after getting involved in a Feed Leeds urban food growing project.
“Todmorden’s Incredible Edible project also had a part to play in getting me thinking about what we could do in our village. The allotments are oversubscribed and there’s not much land elsewhere to plant up – so the park was an obvious choice and the council has given us their full support!
“When I got in touch with the parks people they were just ordering their stock and said tell us what you want – they’ve been fantastic!"
