testosterone-driven comedy about a group of businessmen marooned on an island is the next production from Keighley Playhouse.
Neville’s Island by Tim Firth shows was happens when a team-building exercise goes horribly wrong.
Director Allan Hollings says: “A disparate group of middle-aged, middle-management businessmen sent on a weekend test designed to improve initiative in the Lake District goes awry. Improving communications and relationships just doesn’t come into it.”
The men are led by team leader Neville whose inability to see the plain truth turns out to be a blessing. Then there’s Angus, ‘Mr Average’, a materialistic, repressed domesticated nerd; Roy, vacuously born again after a don't-mention-the-breakdown episode in his past; and sarcastic Gordon whose acerbity fuels the humour.
“The firm balance between the characters is quickly established and the pace is fast from the opening lines,” adds Allan. “Neville’s Island is a very funny script, a combination of funny one-liners and great observational dialogue, but also real touches of pathos.
"Thanks to the talented performers, you witness the unfurling of the characters behind the masks as the play develops. Deliciously disastrous, disastrously deranged – a watertight production!”
Neville’s Island runs at Keighley Playhouse from June 10 to 15 at 7.30pm. Ring 08451 267 859 during office hours.
* Keighley Playhouse’s recent production of Making Waves, a moving play about a lifeboat family, raised more than £500 for the RNLI. Hannah Jackson, community fundraising manager for the charity, who received a cheque for £520.80 from the society, said: “I would like to thank the patrons of Keighley Playhouse for their very generous gift.”
