Fundraisers collected £1,400 to buy a Bob The Builder headstone for a brave Bradford teenager who fought a mystery condition all his short life.
The sun shone on organisers in more than one way at The White Bear pub in Idle on Bank Holiday Sunday. Bumper crowds turned out to support them in their efforts to help Zak Simpson’s family pay their final respects to the 15-year-old, who died in 2011, and was buried at Thornton Cemetery.
Since Zak’s death, his mum Simone Lawless, of Laisterdyke, and her family have tirelessly raised funds to buy toys and give treats to other youngsters on children’s wards, at respite centres, hospices and children’s charity-run play centres.
Miss Lawson said: “I was absolutely gob-smacked. I can’t say a big enough thank you to everyone who has made this possible.
“I’m going to see the headstone makers this week to pay for it and hopefully Zak will have it soon.”
