A 29-year-old man on trial at Bradford Crown Court denied fracturing a club-goer’s skull by knocking him down and stamping on his head.

Daniel Halton has pleaded not guilty to causing Jaen Stavar grievous bodily harm with intent at Conucos, in Sackville Street, Bradford, in the early hours of August 29, 2011.

Halton, of Newill Close, West Bowling, Bradford, told the jury today he punched Mr Stavar once to the head because he would not stop pestering his girlfriend.

David Bradshaw, for the Crown, alleged Halton then stamped on Mr Stavar’s head, causing a right frontal bone fracture.

Mr Bradshaw said Mr Stavar was knocked unconscious in the attack at about 4am.

Halton said he went to the club with his girlfriend, Louise Maguire, and her three woman friends.

He knew a lot of people and was socialising when he saw a man being a pest to Miss Macguire.

When the man persisted in being a nuisance, Halton said he tapped him on the shoulder and pulled him round.

The man made an aggressive gesture and stepped towards him.

Halton said he panicked. He did not want the man to hit him so he lashed out in self defence and struck him to the right hand side of his face.

The man fell down and Halton said doormen dragged him away to a sofa at the other end of the room. He then left and he and Miss Maguire went home.

Halton said he learned the next day that the man had been hurt and he handed himself in at Trafalgar House police station but he was told there was no warrant out for his arrest.

He was arrested and questioned about the incident the following week.

Cross-examined by Mr Bradshaw, Halton said: “Not at any point did I stamp on anybody. I am not a violent person.”

Miss Macguire told the jury the man was dancing too close to her and she felt intimidated by him.

Halton pushed him away and hit him once when he lunged aggressively at him.

She said he did not stamp on him.

The trial continues.
