A tag rugby contest has raised in excess of £2,000 to help a Silsden teenager who was badly injured while playing the sport.

The event at Keighley Rugby Union Club, in Skipton Road, was staged in aid of Nathan Cubitt.

Nathan, 17, broke his neck playing rugby in November 2011 and spends most of his time in a wheelchair.

The organisers of the tag rugby event were aiming to raise cash to help buy a therapeutic chair which will relieve pressure on his body. This type of chair costs nearly £5,000.

The tournament was arranged by family friend Mark Dunstan, backed by members of Nathan’s family and other volunteers. Nathan’s mother, Susan Cubitt, said: “It was absolutely fantastic. We had a lovely turnout, even more than last year. About 400 to 450 people came along.

“We had 12 teams and the winner was Keighley RUFC First Team – the same as last year.

“I think we’ve raised about £2,300 and I’m more than happy with how it went. It was about having fun, but also about keeping the momentum and the awareness-raising going. Nathan really enjoyed the day.

“I want to thank everyone who came and supported us. It was a brilliant day and we will be doing this again next year.”

The therapeutic chair is one of a series of adaptations planned by Mrs Cubitt and her husband Matthew to make Nathan’s life more comfortable.

The couple hope to raise money to buy expensive replacement cushions and other improvements for his wheelchair.

They also recently gained planning permission to extend their home to provide Nathan with his own ground-floor bedroom, living room and washing facilities.

Last weekend’s Nathan Cubitt Trust Tag Rugby competition was a follow-up to the first, successful tournament held last year.

It featured a hog roast, tombola, bouncy castle, bungee run, mountain biking displays and food stalls, as well as performances by Haworth band The Rhythm Junkies in the evening.

Rugby Union World Cup winner Jason Robinson and fellow international Henry Paul were among those who attended.
