More than 200 extra school places will be created in Guiseley if proposals to expand two primaries go ahead.
The plans for Guiseley Infant and Nursery School and St Oswald’s Church of England Junior School would see a total increase in capacity of 210 with effect from September 2015.
A public consultation is to be launched on the linked proposals, which would also see the infant school take children up to the age of 11, instead of the current seven. Meanwhile St Oswald’s would lower its starting age from seven to five. Under the expansion plans, the capacity at Guiseley Infant and Nursery School would rise from 270 pupils to 420. Capacity at St Oswald’s would increase from 360 pupils to 420.
Permission to proceed with the consultations was given at a meeting of Leeds City Council’s Executive Board.
Governors at both schools support the consultations.
A report to the meeting said: “Previous reports have identified a shortage of places in the Guiseley area, where birth rates are rising year on year.”
