The new Lord Mayor of Bradford has been sworn in – and he has invited people to be his consort.

Keighley Central Councillor Khadim Hussain (Lab) took the oath to become the district’s first citizen at a ceremonial council meeting yesterday.

And instead of having a Lady Mayoress or permanent consort, Coun Hussain hopes a range of inspiring Bradfordians will take turns at donning the consort’s chain and accompanying him to dinners, charity concerts and public events.

In particular, Coun Hussain is looking to give the role to people who have overcome disabilities or difficulties to achieve inspiring things or help their communities.

Coun Hussain was sworn in as mayor in a formal ceremony in front of councillors and dignitaries. Councillor Joanne Dodds (Lab, Great Horton) was named Deputy Lord Mayor.

During his year in office, the Lord Mayor will be raising money for Bradford Disability Sport and Leisure, which gives disabled people a chance to take part in sports.

Coun Hussain said his autistic grandson, Mohammad Hudhayfah, had inspired him to choose a disability charity.

After the ceremony, Coun Hussain told the Telegraph & Argus that people like his grandson had abilities as well as disabilities and these should be supported and celebrated.

Coun Hussain, a Kashmiri-born former engineer, said he was honoured to be named Lord Mayor. He said his main aim was to bring people from different faiths, races and backgrounds together.

He said: “This is a district with tremendous potential, with so much more to unite it than to divide it.”

The annual meeting of the full Council heard the departing Lord Mayor, Councillor Dale Smith, had raised more than £100,000 for good causes during his year in office, through his Sprinkling Sunshine appeal. The cash has been handed out to more than 80 organisations and individuals.
