Bradford has a new first citizen after a ceremonial meeting at City Hall today.

Keighley Central Councillor Khadim Hussain (Lab) has become the new Lord Mayor, taking over the reins from Councillor Dale Smith.

His charity for the year is Bradford Disability Sport and Leisure, which gives disabled people across the district a chance to take part in sports.

And instead of having a Lady Mayoress or permanent consort, Coun Hussain hopes a range of inspiring citizens will take turns at the role.

Coun Hussain said he was immensely proud to become Lord Mayor.

He said: “This is a district with tremendous potential, with so much more to unite it than to divide it.”

The meeting heard Coun Smith’s Sprinkling Sunshine appeal had raised more than £100,000 for good causes during his year in office.

Instead of going to just one charity, the cash has been doled out to more than 80 organisations and individuals, a first for the district.

Coun Smith said his highlights of the year had included meeting the Queen during her visit to the district and seeing Bradford play at Wembley in the Capital One Cup final.
