Talks are set to continue tomorrow between Council bosses and Bradford City about the prospect of staging a celebration of the team’s promotion heroics.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Dale Smith, a devoted Bantams’ fan, said the authority was keen to hold “a celebration for Bradford’s citizens” and “positive talks” were being held.

Coun Smith was unable to be at Wembley for yesterday’s League Two play-off final as it clashed with the Lord Mayor’s Parade, but he described City’s resounding 3-0 victory over Northampton as being the icing on the cake of a brilliant year in office.

“It couldn’t have been better,” he said.

Congratulating the team, whose two Wembley appearances this season have provided a huge boost of pride to the district, the Lord Mayor added: “It’s just magic. It was an outstanding victory, and Bradford City are reaping the rewards of what they have achieved this season.

“It is a small step on a long road to even better things.”

Coun Smith said he looked forward to new teams and their fans visiting the city.

“They will have an amazing time when they come and especially if they stay and have a look round the district. They will really see all Bradford has to offer.”

Politicians across the district put aside their differences to send their congratulations to the Bantams.

Councillor David Green, leader of the Labour-run Council – who was at the match – said: “It was an absolutely stunning result and a stunning performance by the fans and the players at Wembley.

“It was just a pleasure to be there and now I hope that the club can continue to go from strength to strength.

Respect MP George Galloway, whose Bradford West constituency includes Valley Parade, called City’s achievement “magnificent and comprehensive”.

“Congratulations to Phil and the lads – it was real Roy of the Rovers stuff,” he said.

“The Council must give them a civic reception for the glory they have brought to Bradford and the club needs to give them fresh contracts all round. It's a huge fillip for the city.

“The team will go into next season with massive confidence and after this they must believe nothing is beyond them.”

Bradford East Liberal Democrat MP David Ward, who was also among the Wembley crowd, said: “It is all just wonderful and a thoroughly-deserved win. I went to the game on the coach and got back at about 10pm.

“The mood and atmosphere compared to the Cup Final was a lot different. “I think everyone was more nervous this time, it was a serious game of football and we wanted to win and be promoted.

“But it was almost an anticlimax because we dominated the game so much.”

Bradford South Labour MP Gerry Sutcliffe, who is a director at Super League club Bradford Bulls, said: “It is a great result for the club, and is evidence of all the hard work that has gone into a fantastic season.

“They are a great credit to the city. It keeps our profile high with such success and I wish them well in the coming season.”

Shipley Conservative MP Philip Davies said: “It is absolutely fabulous news. They’ve had a dream season and to get to Wembley twice in one season is just unbelievable and to get promoted on top of that is just incredible.

“Not only have they done brilliantly well for themselves but they have instilled a great amount of pride for everyone living in Bradford.

“The first half in particular was a dream come true. They’ve now got the potential to do fantastic in the next season in League One.”

The Deputy Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Mike Gibbons, added: “I would have loved to have been there. What fantastic news for the club and players, but for the city as well.

“Everyone is so proud of them and what they have achieved and the good news stories they have brought to Bradford.

“I’m absolutely thrilled.”

Councillor Glen Miller, leader of the Council’s Conservative group, said: “A 3-0 victory is excellent news. A lot of hard work has been put into it by the team, management and chairmen.

“They can stand with their heads held high proud of what they have done for the district of Bradford, who can all share in that glory.

“I will be suggesting a civic reception for the team, management, chairmen and invited guests.”
