For Bradford pop star Gareth Gates, it was the springboard to his singing career.
He started singing at Bradford Cathedral and now the cathedral is encouraging would-be choristers to find out more at an open event from 4.30pm on Thursday at its Church Bank venue.
Boys between seven and ten and their families are invited to join in with some singing and learn about the benefits of being involved in a cathedral choir.
Last year, the choir recorded for BBC2 and also took part in a singing tour to Cambridge and London.
Jonathan Eyre, the cathedral’s assistant director of music, said the choir in its form has been going for over a year with separate boys and girls choirs.
The cathedral also has opportunities for girls from Year 3 upwards.
