A runner completed a half-marathon in aid of Manorlands — despite breaking his leg three miles from the finish.
Mark Rushworth, of Southlands Grove, Bingley, hobbled around the remainder of the Leeds Half-Marathon course after being struck by excrutiating pain.
But it wasn’t until the following day he discovered the cause of his agony – a double fracture to the fibula in his right leg.
“I was absolutely fine at the start of the race – in fact I was flying and on course for a personal best time,” said Mr Rushworth, 38.
“At about 10 miles I stopped to tie my shoelace and just felt queasy and extreme pain.
“I was determined to carry on and finish. Medics were asking me if I was OK to continue and jogging alongside but there was no way I was going to give up.
“I’d trained hard in all weathers for about three months.”
The following morning he went to Airedale Hospital to get the leg checked and the double fracture was identified on x-ray. He will be on crutches for six weeks, and running will be off limits for three months, but he says he’s not been put off from returning to the sport.
