Bradford Bee Keepers’ Association is buzzing over the official opening of its new apiary on the site of a former bowling green.
The wife of supermarket-chain Morrisons’ life president Sir Ken Morrison, Lady Lynne Morrison, did the honours in the company of the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Dale Smith, association members and representatives of local companies and organisations who have all helped the apiary happen. Sir Ken is the Association's patron.
The association had thought it would take five years to establish the apiary at Knowles Park in Dudley Hill but it has taken only three.
Since the association began in 2010 with just a handful of dedicated beekeepers, its membership has now grown to more than 65 thanks to its training courses run from beginner level.
As well as monthly meetings there are regular organised bee keeping activities in the apiary, the association also hopes to invite in schools and community groups.
Next month the apiary will be host to an open-air murder mystery “Beyond the Veil” by the Mikron Theatre Company.
The performance is at 3pm on Saturday, June 8, and the public are invited to turn up from noon with a picnic and take the opportunity to visit the apiary and find out more about its busy bee inhabitants and how to look after them. More details can be found at bfdbka.org.uk
