Specialist police officers are investigating allegations that a six-year-old boy was raped at a house in Bradford.
A 14-year-old youth has been questioned about the allegation and has been released on bail while inquiries continue.
The incident is alleged to have taken place in the Thackley area.
It is understood the victim and the accused were known to each other, but not related.
The alleged rape is being investigated by officers from Bradford’s Child and Public Protection Unit, and specially trained officers are assisting the family of the complainant.
A West Yorkshire Police spokesman confirmed yesterday: “Police attended an address in Thackley, on Tuesday, May 7, following a complaint of sexual assault against a six-year-old boy.
“A 14-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of rape and was bailed pending further inquiries.”
It is understood police were contacted later that evening by a member of the younger boy’s family. The victim is not thought to have been physically injured.
Police are working with partner agencies, including Bradford Council’s social services department, on the sensitive case.
Councillor Jeanette Sunderland, Lib Dem leader on Bradford Council, whose ward is Idle and Thackley, was told of the allegation yesterday.
Coun Sunderland said: “I have been informed of an incident. I understand that the police and other necessary authorities are dealing with the families – in the sensitive way you would expect in such difficult circumstances. I am satisfied that the relevant authorities are supporting the families.”
A spokesman for Bradford Council confirmed that the council’s social services department was aware of the alleged incident.
