Actress Meera Syal is to join the cast of Bollywood Carmen, taking place in Bradford’s City Park next month.
Miss Syal (above), who shot to fame in BBC sketch show Goodnes Gracious Me, will play Lily P in the Bollywood opera, and also announced is David Schaal, who has appeared in TV comedies The Office and The Inbetweeners.
An actress and writer, Miss Syal wrote the screenplay for 1993 film Bhaji on the Beach and Anita and Me, based on her novel. She was one of the writers and performers on The Kumars at No 42, and she and the cast joined Bradford’s Gareth Gates on chart-topping Comic Relief single Spirit in the Sky.
Bollywood Carmen, bringing the vibrancy of Indian cinema to Bizet’s opera, is a one-hour show set and performed in City Park and broadcast live on BBC Three on Sunday, June 9.
