A school’s Japanese club tried oriental goodies and activities to mark a traditional children’s celebration.
Bradford Grammar School pupils celebrated Japan’s Children’s Day, or Tango no Sekku, by trying their hand at origami and learning about the country’s traditions.
The Japanese Club, organised by Japanese teacher Saeko Woodhead, learned about the traditions associated with the day, such as raising carp-shaped Koinobori flags.
The pupils also tasted mochi rice cakes wrapped in oak leaves with a sweet bean paste, which are traditionally eaten on the day, and learned about Kintaro dolls, which wear Japanese helmets to symbolise strength and health.
