A Bollywood superstar has been in Bradford celebrating the centenary of Indian cinema.
May 3, 1913, saw the premiere of the first Indian film, Raja Harishchandra. Events in Bradford celebrating the centenary include a Bollywood version of Bizet’s opera Carmen in City Park and an exhibition of Bollywood film posters at the National Media Museum.
Bollywood superstar Jackie Shroff visited the exhibition, Bollywood Icons: 100 Years of Indian Cinema, and took part in a question-and-answer session.
Mr Shroff is the star of more than 150 Indian films, including Hero and Devdas. He said: “I am delighted to be visiting Bradford, the world’s first Unesco City of Film, to join the celebrations around 100 years of Indian cinema.
“I know Bradford has organised many events to mark this anniversary and it will be a pleasure to attend some myself, to talk about the significance of Indian cinema and see the impact it has made elsewhere in the world.”
The actor was guest of honour at a gala dinner and met the Lord Mayor of Bradford and film students from Bradford College.
