Volunteers are hosting a ‘blossom day’ party today to celebrate the tenth anniversary of an orchard.
Organic apples, pears and plums have been growing in the orchard, on allotments at Bowling Park, for a decade.
The trees were planted by pupils at Bowling Park Primary and have been looked after by volunteers at Bradford Environmental Education Service (BEES) and the Friends of Bowling Park Community Orchard.
The orchard will be open to the public from 11am to 3pm today for a special version of their annual ‘blossom day’ celebration, held to celebrate the start of the growing year.
There will be art and practical tasks, as well as a host of fruit-themed refreshments.
The team also hosts an ‘apple day’ celebration each autumn, when the crop is made into cakes, juices and other treats for volunteers and guests to enjoy. BEES’ Environmental Programmes Manager Julia Pearson said: “Ribston Pippin is one of my favourites. It has about five times as much vitamin C as a Golden Delicious, and it’s a great Yorkshire apple.”
