Psychedelic blues supergroup The Former Members – so-called because they used to belong to US West Coast combos including the Steve Miller Band and Country Joe and the Fish – are coming to Keighley this spring.
Back in 1967, landmark three-day rock concert the Monterey International Pop Music Festival was held in California, featuring early American appearances by Jimi Hendrix and The Who and the first major public performance of Janis Joplin. Psychedelic legends Country Joe and The Fish, The Blues Project and the Steve Miller Band also appeared. The Former Members – David Bennett Cohen, Roy Blumenfeld, Bruce Barthol and Greg Douglass – are core members of these three bands.
Last year they collaborated on a retrospective project to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the landmark festival and hitting the road.
Now about to release an album, they return to the UK with the PsychedelAmericana UK tour, showcasing the diverse, skilful range of musicianship that takes audiences back to Sixties San Francisco when they wore flowers in their hair.
- The Former Members will be at the Arts Exchange, Keighley, on Thursday. Tickets are available from exchangearts.co.uk.
