A lighthearted puppet show will carry a serious message at family fun days.

The two child safety-themed fun days are being held in June at City Park, Bradford, and East Riddlesden Hall, Keighley. They aim to educate parents and carers about the number of accidents that seriously injure or kill children every year and the steps people can take to prevent them.

Rough Magic Theatre Company will be performing the children’s puppet show, based on Peggy Rathmann’s children’s book ‘Officer Buckle and Gloria’, which tells the story of a policeman upstaged by his police dog while giving talks to schools.

There will also be face painting, games and safety displays, while experts will be giving advice on road safety, keeping safe in the sun and avoiding burns.

The Council’s Road Safety Team, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, the ambulance service, local NHS teams, Bradford Safeguarding Children’s Board and the Council’s Family Information Service will be just some of the teams taking part.

Parents, carers, nursery schools and children centres are invited to bring a picnic.

Kath Tunstall, strategic director for children’s services, said: "Child safety is everyone’s responsibility. It’s fantastic to see such a collaborative event which targets the whole community and which will give some practical advice on how we make life safer for all our children.”

The fun days are being held at East Riddlesden Hall on June 25 and City Park on June 28, from 10am to 4pm.

They are just two of the events Bradford Council is arranging to mark Child Safety Week, which runs from Monday June 24 to 30.

The week will also see workshops for primary schools taking place at the National Media Museum and other events going on in local children centres.

Councillor Ralph Berry, portfolio holder for children’s services said: “The week is an excellent initiative in which we can focus attention in a fun way on what is a very serious topic. I would urge everyone who is responsible for young children to come along.”

Tom Rhodes, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s district prevention manager said: “Preventing accidents happening is a real priority for our service, so bringing so many families and children together to help them understand about safety is a really positive step.”
