British military personnel joined their coalition partners from Australia and New Zealand to commemorate ANZAC Day during a dawn service at Kandahar Air Field, Afghanistan.

Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) Day is held to commemorate those soldiers who fought at Gallipoli on April 25, 1915, against the Ottoman Empire (modern day Turkey) during World War One.

An estimated 8,709 soldiers from Australia and 2,721 soldiers from New Zealand died in the war.

At 04.30 on April 25, 2013, more than 250 Australians and one New Zealander hosted service personnel from countries including the USA, UK, Romania and France to commemorate ANZAC Day. The Australian Chaplain hosted the dawn service, where members from coalition forces were invited to lay wreaths.

An Honour Roll of the 39 Australians and 10 New Zealanders who lost their lives in Afghanistan was also read out. The last post was played and the flag was lowered to half-mast.
