S&I, part of the Houston, Texas-based Powell Electrical Group, designs and manufactures switchgear, motor control and power management systems.
In 2005, when S&I was bought by Powell from the Ilkley-based NG Bailey group the firm employed about 300 people. At the time of the deal Powell pledged to continue investment at S&I's Ripley Road site in a bid to increase sales in Europe and the Middle East .
About 85 jobs were cut at S&I in 2004 through a restructuring aimed at fighting off competition from overseas.
