Twenty-four hours before his wedding former Royal Marine Harold Robinson, of Otley, was still at a training camp in Cornwall.
That was 70 years ago, at a crucial point of the Second World War when active servicemen were sent away at a moment’s notice.
But Harold, 92, made it back to Yorkshire in time to marry bride, Laura – and the couple have just celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary.
Mrs Robinson, 91 said: “Harold managed to get here at midnight the day before. He had to travel all the way up from Cornwall in a day but he made it!
“People are always asking what’s the secret to a long marriage but I don’t think there is one, you just keep going.”
The Robinsons, of Teal Beck Court, had a double celebration to mark the occasion starting with an afternoon buffet tea party with live music and dancing and then a family get-together.
