An MP is backing calls to slow down traffic on a road where a grandmother was killed just a few steps from her front door.
Gerry Sutcliffe, who knew victim Mary Byrne, has been contacted by residents who have been battling for years to get cars to cut their speed on Mandale Road in Horton Bank Top.
The 51-year-old was killed when a BMW collided with a cab she had just got out of at 5.16pm on Saturday.
Initially it was reported that the woman was paying her fare when she was hit, but it is now thought that she was crossing the road to her home when the private hire car, a Vauxhall Vectra, was doing a U-turn and was in collision with a black BMW.
Three men, aged 21, 19 and 17, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and are now on police bail.
The driver of the cab was taken to hospital for a check-up.
Residents have been trying for several years to get speed calming measures on the road and St John The Evangelist Catholic Primary School has also been pleading for drivers to slow down.
The accident happened just yards from one of the school’s gates which has a poster on it by Mary Byrne’s granddaughter, Grace, pleading for drivers to be considerate.
School staff were due to have a private meeting with councillors last night, which had been planned before the tragedy.
Bradford South MP Mr Sutcliffe (Lab) said: “I’m aware the Council and councillors have been trying to do things, but it’s not been working, so we need to sit down with the Council and councillors to try and get traffic calming measures that will be successful.
“No other family should have to go through what they have gone through.”
Mr Sutcliffe said he was more than happy to get involved with attempts to get traffic calming measures on the road.
Anyone who saw the accident or a black BMW 3 series or a blue Ford Focus before the accident should call police on (01924) 293 047 or 101.
