A village social club worker has been jailed for 12 months after fleeing in terror with the takings when the police caught up with him for a street mugging.
Danny Green, 22, sneaked into Addingham Social Club to empty the safe and then took a taxi to Bridlington where he spent his ill-gotten gains, Bradford Crown Court heard.
Green, of Main Street in the village, was on bail for attempted robbery when he committed the burglary. He was persuaded by his parents to hand himself into the police after blowing the £1,100 he had stolen from the club on food, drink and lodgings.
Green pleaded guilty to attempting to rob a 16-year-old boy in the village after midnight on August 4 last year.
Prosecutor Anthony Moore said yesterday the boy was walking home when Green seized him from behind in a stranglehold and said: “Give me your wallet.”
When the boy said he had no wallet, Green demanded his phone. His victim pushed him away and ran off.
Green was arrested in September and bailed.
On November 27, he unlocked the social club, where he had been working part-time for a month, after midnight and stole the night’s £300 takings and extra cash. He fled to the seaside resort and was wanted on warrant but came back to face justice.
Green’s solicitor advocate, Anne-Marie Hutton, said he wanted to apologise to the boy he mugged. He hung his head in shame as a member of a rural community where such crimes were not anticipated.
Green was petrified when the law caught up with him for the robbery attempt. He stole the club’s money to get away.
He had since been diagnosed with mental health issues and had sought help for his heavy drinking.
Judge John Potter said he bore in mind that Green’s family had suffered two recent very tragic deaths. But he had previous convictions and the boy he mugged must have been frightened.
