Staff at a Bradford primary school will tomorrow meet councillors to call for traffic calming measures on nearby roads, days after the grandma of two of its pupils was killed yards from its gates.
Mary Byrne, 51, was paying a minicab a fare in Mandale Road, Horton Bank Top, when a car crashed into the stationary cab, leaving her with fatal injuries.
The Telegraph & Argus reported yesterday how the tragedy on Saturday happened only a few steps away from the entrance of St John’s School, where a poster by her seven-year-old granddaughter Grace pleaded for drivers to be considerate.
Headteacher Kath Spillane said the school had been campaigning for traffic calming measures on Mandale Road and Chartwell Drive after a child was involved in a near-miss with a car.
Pupils and parents have collected more than 200 signatures on a petition and representatives from the school will hold a pre-arranged meeting with Bradford Council tomorrow to discuss what can be done to make nearby roads safer.
She said: “We have problems with speeding motorists on Mandale Road and Charwell Drive and with people parking inconsiderately.
Mrs Spillane added: “It was a member of the school community that was killed this weekend. Her granddaughter and grandson are pupils here.”
Councillor Michael Walls (Con, Queensbury) told how he had spoken to residents on Mandale Road, including many who were backing the school’s calls for traffic calming measures on the street.
“People in the area are devastated, especially those who knew her and her children,” said Coun Walls.
Police say the crash involved a black BMW 3 series, but officers also want to speak to anyone who saw that vehicle with a blue Ford Focus before the incident which happened at about 5.15pm.
Officer yesterday confirmed three men arrested in connection with the crash have been released on bail pending further inquiries.
The only occupant of the BMW, a 21-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and two other men, aged 19 and 17, were also arrested on the same grounds.
Anyone with information should contact the Major Collision Enquiry Team on (01924) 293047 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
