A drunken burglar was so intoxicated he kept falling over as he tried to pedal off on a stolen bike, Bradford Crown Court heard.

A crowd of onlookers watched as Mark Bennett three times fell off the bike into the road. Prosecutor Abigail Langford told the court the defendant then collided with a police vehicle and fell off again.

He then racially abused PC Majahid Ashruff as he arrested him. Bennett, 24, of Bairston Street, Allerton, Bradford, pleaded guilty to burglary and racially aggravated threatening or abusive behaviour.

Miss Langford said Bennett knocked on the door of the complainant’s house, in Brassey Terrace, West Bowling, Bradford, at 7pm. His speech was slurred, he appeared to be “off his head” and was aggressive. The complainant called the police, but heard the noise as Bennett broke in and stole his £800 mountain bike from the living room.

Stephen Couch, mitigating, said Bennett was a reformed character. His partner was 16 weeks pregnant and he had not been drinking since January.

Bennett was given a ten month prison sentence suspended for a year, with supervision, an intensive activity programme and 150 hours community work.
