Marie Curie nurses are saying a big thank you to people across the district for contributing to another successful Great Daffodil Appeal.
The Bradford Marie Curie Hospice, which also covers Calderdale and Craven, collected around £32,500 in street collections during the month-long appeal in March.
Volunteer collectors were out in force to encourage people to wear the charity’s daffodil pin and make a donation to support people with a terminal illness.
The efforts of the Bradford Hospice Fundraising Group have been highlighted as their volunteer collectors contributed about £6,500, which is their best yet. The Shipley fundraising group also celebrated a successful effort, collecting about £4,000 after spending 25 days in the town’s Asda supermarket.
Meanwhile four volunteers, including two staff nurses and the principle social worker from the Bradford hospice, persevered in the snow in Haworth to collect £192.83.
Money raised from the Great Daffodil Appeal helps Marie Curie nurses to provide free care to people with terminal illnesses at the Marie Curie Hospice, Bradford, or in their own homes, and also provides emotional support to families and friends.
Bradford Council granted nine permits for charity street collections to support the appeal and the totals raised included: Baildon £413.26, Saltaire £114.68, Keighley £342.79, Bingley, £544.64, Burley-in-Wharfedale £292.68, Bradford city centre £495.87, Ilkley £998.64.
A Shipley collection had to be cancelled due to heavy snow.
The amounts in collection boxes held in shops and other businesses are yet to be collected and added to the total.
Lucy Burnett, community fundraiser said: “Thank you to everyone across the Bradford area who has supported Marie Curie Cancer Care and this year’s Great Daffodil Appeal.
“From our brilliant volunteer donation collectors and the members of our fundraising groups who tirelessly encouraged people to donate and wear a daffodil pin, to everyone who gave what they could to support people with a terminal illness I want to say a big, heartfelt thank-you.
“The Great Daffodil Appeal is vital in helping Marie Curie Cancer Care nurse people with terminal illnesses in their final hours and everyone’s support will make a real difference.”
